Vibrant Art with Serendipity
Texas native, Donna Kaye Compton, has been a professional artist since 1982. Her first works were Americana Folk Art using acrylic paints. She taught Acrylic art classes for several years, was commissioned to do custom work in homes that included Parade of Homes in Dallas, TX area as well as murals, one of which is on an historic theatre in downtown Carrollton, TX. Donna has since added oil, watercolor, colored pencil and collage art to her medium of art. She enjoys painting abstracts, realism and portraits. Donna credits much of her continued enthusiasm for art to her membership in the Creative to Thrive Mentoring with Matt Tommey on Facebook.
It is not the brush that creates a painting but the heart and soul of the artist.”
Contemporary Abstract Art
Donna had been painting abstract art paintings for two years when her adventure with semi-abstract art began. Her daughter asked her to create a small painting of a flowering cactus. Donna found herself painting what her heart saw. It looked like a flowering cactus, but she softened the colors, giving the prickly plants a unique gentleness. Her daughter loved it, which inspired Donna to create more vibrant art, more wonderful and whimsical art experiences to delight art lovers.
Donna’s expressions on various surfaces are more than abstract or semi-abstract art paintings. This type of contemporary art is often a whimsical, pulsing with music and motion, and, sometimes, tranquil and soothing. It is also known as Lyrical abstraction that allows a person to interpret or “read” the painting. Nothing pleases her more than when her art resonates within a viewer’s heart. Her inspiration is inspired by her ability to see life with the eye of a photographer…but through her heart’s lens, not the camera’s. She captures the beauty as light and shadows play on nature’s scenery or the energy flowing through people in their daily life. Donna expresses her Contemporary artwork as a visual impact in her abstract and semi-abstract paintings.
The verb abstract means literally to remove or pull away from concrete reality. In art, it is an expression of the soul rather than a representation of the body. Literature, for example, is reading a poem with your mind, while beauty is reading it with your heart, hearing its song, and sharing its story. Donna invites you to view her abstract and semi-abstract art with your heart, discovering the unique beauty within it that sometimes has a touch of realism which can be a pleasant surprise to the eye.
Realism with a Bit of Whimsical and Collage
Donna painted in a stylistic realism with her Folk Art and it sometimes crosses into her realistic style today. She realized that developing ones “style” is often what comes from the different experiences you have on your creative journey. With this in mind, she is beginning a new series of realism that should be on the website in February-March 2018. Donna has also done some cards that are whimsically realistic figures in watercolor and is continuing that serendipitous style - “serendipitous realism?”
Mixed Media Collage and Paintings
Donna’s finished pieces include realism using mixed media collage art, acrylic painting and colored pencil. Her mixed media painting are “in-the-moment” creative, and sometimes whimsical, dance from deep inside her. Music and Movement are a key factor when creating her meix media art collages. Music and Movement is part of the process in her preparation for her creative work - a spirit, soul and body connection to the art she creates. For her, art tells a story that is in the heart of the beholder. She enjoys hearing what others see and feel when they contemplate one of her creations. For her - art is an open door to creating something she could call her own and love every moment of it.
Painting is a form of profound creative release.”
Modern Abstract Acrylic Painting
Vibrant colors in acrylic on large canvases decorate her walls in her home and studio along with a few of her creative collage designs. She still has her Folk Art pieces from her early years of painting on display, too. She has done a few portraits in oil and hopes to do some more of that when she has more space to add another easel for that medium. She is soon to move into a new home that will have a larger space for her art studio so she can possibly teach and work in several mediums. She is especially looking forward to “expressing” all the new inspiration she has been collecting and tucking into her heart, placing it on a canvas, or a collage piece, or on watercolor paper or card-stock for others to take home and enjoy for years too come. Yes, Donna loves being creative - the acrylic artist in her is always planning the color(s) to use on her next canvas or what can she use for her mixed media art that is unique and perhaps a bit of the whimsical art, too.
You have a sacred gift called creativity. You, your work and purpose in this life are valuable - even essential - to helping the world experience beauty and abundance.”
Creative Collage with Mixed Media
When I begin a creative collage design I remember being a child-actor. Oh, not the type you’re thinking about, but the little girl in front of her bedroom mirror opening her TV show - The “Donna Kaye Scott Variety Hour”. I would sing, and tell of marvelous adventures I’d been on, making the (imaginary) audience roar with laughter or cry with empathy.
I still love to bring people (in reality) to places in their hearts and souls that leave them feeling as though they’d been on the adventure, imagining stories untold. That is how I am with my creative collage designs - whether it be a collage art idea with figurative or whimsical, using mixed-media or collage mediums. To bring beauty or laughter into someone’s life through my expression of the song, the dance, the story I feel and see in my heart’s eye - bringing it to life in my works of art. I truly enjoy creating a rich palette of collage art techniques (pictures and poetry) for collage artwork. I use colored pencils, ink pens, watercolor in most of my collage art pieces. These are gifts that can be custom made which makes them all the more special “one-of-a-kind” gifts.
Collage art is like having a dream, only you get to review it over and over, seeing something new each time”
“People truly want to be inspired by art, to see the world in a different light. Donna’s inspiration comes from the adventure of delving into the world of serendipity as she puts a new canvas on the easel, going heart-first into an encounter of pleasant surprises. She begins to hear the music when she sees color…and her heart sings.”
